Suspension and Steering Repair

Walk-Ins WelcomeSame-Day Service AvailableHonest Inspections

Charleston-area roads punish suspension components. Broken pavement on Rivers Avenue, expansion joints on the bridges, and years of salt-air corrosion wear out bushings, ball joints and tie rod ends faster than a mileage chart predicts — and a worn front end ruins tires and alignment along with ride quality.

Champion Tires & Brakes inspects the entire front and rear suspension as a system. We check for play at each joint, look for leaking struts and shocks, and identify which specific part is causing the clunk you hear rather than recommending a blanket overhaul.

Pricing

Quoted after inspection

Suspension repair is priced by component and vehicle. A single sway bar end link is inexpensive; a full strut assembly, control arm or rack replacement is not. We inspect and quote before any work.

What affects your final cost

  • Which parts are worn and how many
  • Corrosion and seized fasteners — very common on coastal vehicles
  • Whether an alignment is required afterward (it usually is)
  • Parts availability for your make and model

Starting prices are estimates. Final pricing depends on your vehicle, the parts it needs, and what we find during inspection.

Suspension symptoms

  • Clunking or knocking over bumps and railroad crossings
  • The vehicle keeps bouncing after a dip instead of settling
  • Nose dive under braking or excessive body roll in turns
  • Steering wanders or feels loose on the highway
  • Uneven or cupped tire wear
  • Popping or clicking when turning the wheel
  • One corner of the vehicle sits visibly lower

What we inspect

  • Ball joints and tie rod ends for vertical and lateral play
  • Control arm and sway bar bushings and end links
  • Struts and shocks for leaking, bottoming and damping loss
  • Coil springs for cracks and sag
  • Wheel bearings
  • Steering rack, inner tie rods and rack boots
  • Motor and transmission mounts, which can imitate suspension clunks
  • Tire wear pattern as evidence of what's actually worn

What repair includes

  • Component-level diagnosis so you replace what's worn
  • Quality replacement parts appropriate to your vehicle
  • Torque-to-spec at ride height where required
  • Alignment recommendation after any steering or suspension part is replaced
  • Road test to confirm the noise or handling issue is gone

How it works at our Rivers Ave shop

  1. Step 1

    Road test

We ride with the symptom so we're chasing the right noise.

  2. Step 2

    Lift and inspect

Each joint is checked for play with the weight off the wheels.

  3. Step 3

    Show you

You can see and often feel the loose component yourself.

  4. Step 4

    Repair and align

Parts replaced, then alignment restored so tires don't pay the price.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my struts are bad?

Classic signs are continued bouncing after a bump, nose dive under braking, cupped tire wear, and visible oil on the strut body. Struts wear gradually, so many drivers don't notice until a new set is installed.

Is a clunking noise dangerous?

It depends on the source. A worn sway bar link is annoying; a failing ball joint can separate and cause loss of control. That's why we identify the specific component rather than guessing.

Do I need an alignment after suspension work?

Yes, any time a steering or suspension component that affects geometry is replaced. Skipping it undoes the repair by wearing new tires unevenly.

Should struts be replaced in pairs?

Generally yes, per axle. Mismatched damping side to side makes the vehicle handle unpredictably, especially in emergency maneuvers.

What customers say

5 out of 5 stars
I have been coming here for two years and this is by far the most accommodating, honest, and experienced workers (Paul, Juan, and Mary) that I have encountered. They cover a wide array of issues from new tires to engine work. I will not go anywhere else. Thank you guys for helping me with my car.

She got me set up with an alignment and the issue was fixed!! I didn't have to wait long, and the price was great! I will definitely be sending my friends and family here to get work done!
