Not every problem sets a code. A vibration at 60 mph, a click when you turn, a battery that keeps dying, a car that stalls only when it's hot — these take a technician who can test systematically rather than throw parts at the symptom. That's the work our diagnostic bay exists for.

Champion Tires & Brakes has been diagnosing Charleston-area vehicles across every major system: engine management, charging and starting, ABS, cooling, drivability and noise complaints. Customers routinely tell us the biggest thing we provide is a straight answer about what's actually wrong.

Diagnostic charges depend on the complexity and how long the fault takes to reproduce. We tell you the diagnostic cost before we start.

What affects your final cost

  • Number of systems involved
  • Intermittent vs. constant faults
  • Road-test time needed to reproduce the symptom
  • Specialty testing such as smoke, scope or draw testing

Starting prices are estimates. Final pricing depends on your vehicle, the parts it needs, and what we find during inspection.

Problems we diagnose

  • Warning lights: check engine, ABS, traction control, battery, temperature
  • Intermittent stalling, no-start or hard-start conditions
  • Noises — clunks over bumps, clicks in turns, whines that change with speed
  • Vibrations that appear at a specific speed
  • Overheating in traffic
  • Electrical gremlins, parasitic battery drain and dead batteries
  • Poor fuel economy with no obvious cause

Our diagnostic approach

  • Full multi-module scan, including ABS and body modules
  • Live data logging during a road test to reproduce the fault
  • Charging and starting system load testing
  • Parasitic draw testing for batteries that die overnight
  • Physical inspection of suspension, mounts and driveline for noise complaints
  • Cooling system pressure testing
  • Visual inspection for leaks, chafed wiring and corroded grounds

What you get

  • A documented list of confirmed faults, not a guess
  • Priority order: safety first, then reliability, then convenience
  • Parts and labor quoted separately
  • Photos or a walk-out to the vehicle so you can see the problem
  • No obligation to have the repair done here

How it works at our Rivers Ave shop

  1. Step 1

    Interview

When it happens, how often, hot or cold — the details narrow the search fast.

  2. Step 2

    Scan and log

Full module scan plus live data during a road test.

  3. Step 3

    Isolate

Physical testing confirms the component before anything is replaced.

  4. Step 4

    Report and quote

You leave knowing exactly what's wrong and what it costs.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a free code scan?

A code scan tells you which circuit reported a problem. Diagnosis determines why. That difference is the reason people replace the same sensor twice and still have the light on.

My car only does it sometimes. Can you still find it?

Often yes. We log live data and, for intermittent electrical issues, can test for voltage drops and parasitic draw. Some faults require keeping the vehicle longer to catch.

Do I have to have the repair done here?

No. You get the diagnostic findings either way. Most customers choose to have us do the work because the diagnosis is already done.

Can you diagnose noises and vibrations?

Yes. Those are inspection and road-test jobs rather than scan-tool jobs, and they're a big part of what we do day to day.

What customers say

5 out of 5 stars
If I could give ten stars I would. First time using a mechanic in Charleston, so I was very nervous. Miss Mary was amazing, gave exceptional customer service and answered any questions I had. They really took their time to diagnose the AC issue I was having. The mechanic was very thorough and called me every couple hrs to tell me what troubleshooting was done and what they were going to do next. Plus, they squeezed in an alignment and tire rotation same day. If you're looking for a mechanic that will give you peace of mind and fair pricing, I suggest Champion.

I have been coming here for two years and this is by far the most accommodating, honest, and experienced workers (Paul, Juan, and Mary) that I have encountered. They cover a wide array of issues from new tires to engine work. I will not go anywhere else. Thank you guys for helping me with my car.
