Car AC Repair in North Charleston, SC

Walk-Ins WelcomeSame-Day Service AvailableHonest Inspections

A Lowcountry summer makes air conditioning a safety issue, not a luxury. Champion Tires & Brakes diagnoses and repairs automotive AC systems for North Charleston drivers — from a simple leak and recharge to compressor, condenser and blower motor replacement.

We don't just dump refrigerant in and send you off. Refrigerant doesn't get used up; if your system is low, it leaked out somewhere. We pressure-test and use dye or an electronic detector to find the source so you're not back in three weeks with the same warm air.

Starting price

$179.99

AC service starts at $179.99. Component repairs — compressor, condenser, evaporator or blower motor — are quoted after diagnosis because parts and labor vary enormously between vehicles.

What affects your final cost

  • Refrigerant type; R-1234yf systems cost significantly more than R-134a
  • Amount of refrigerant your system holds
  • Which component failed and how buried it is
  • Whether the compressor grenaded and contaminated the system
  • Cabin filter or blower motor replacement

Starting prices are estimates. Final pricing depends on your vehicle, the parts it needs, and what we find during inspection.

AC symptoms we see most

  • Air blows warm, or only cools while you're moving
  • Cooling fades after 10–15 minutes of driving
  • Weak airflow from the vents at every fan speed
  • A musty or sour smell when the AC first turns on
  • Clicking or squealing from the compressor when AC engages
  • Water pooling on the passenger floorboard
  • Compressor never kicks on at all

What we diagnose

  • High- and low-side system pressures with gauges
  • Compressor clutch engagement and electrical control
  • Condenser and radiator airflow, including debris blockage
  • Cooling fan operation — a dead fan makes AC quit at idle
  • Cabin air filter and blower motor performance
  • Leak testing at fittings, hoses, condenser and evaporator case
  • Refrigerant charge weight against factory specification

What service includes

  • Full performance test with vent temperature readings
  • Evacuation and recharge to the exact factory refrigerant weight
  • Leak detection with dye or electronic detector
  • Cabin filter check
  • Written explanation of what failed and why

How it works at our Rivers Ave shop

  1. Step 1

    Performance test

We measure actual vent temperature and system pressures.

  2. Step 2

    Find the leak

Dye or electronic detection rather than a refill-and-hope approach.

  3. Step 3

    Quote the repair

You get the real cause and price before we proceed.

  4. Step 4

    Repair and verify

Evacuate, recharge by weight, and re-test cooling performance.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my car AC warm at idle but cold while driving?

That pattern almost always points to airflow across the condenser — usually a failing cooling fan, a blocked condenser, or an overcharged system. It can also be an early sign of a weak compressor.

Can't I just use a recharge can from the parts store?

Those cans have no way to measure how much refrigerant is already in the system, and overcharging causes poor cooling and compressor damage. They also don't fix the leak that emptied the system.

How long does AC diagnosis take?

A basic performance test and leak check is usually about an hour. Evaporator leaks buried in the dash take longer to confirm.

Why does my AC smell musty?

Moisture and organic growth on the evaporator core, often paired with a clogged cabin filter or a blocked condensate drain. We can treat the system and replace the filter.

What customers say

5 out of 5 stars
If I could give ten stars I would. First time using a mechanic in Charleston, so I was very nervous. Miss Mary was amazing, gave exceptional customer service and answered any questions I had. They really took their time to diagnose the AC issue I was having. The mechanic was very thorough and called me every couple hrs to tell me what troubleshooting was done and what they were going to do next. Plus, they squeezed in an alignment and tire rotation same day. If you're looking for a mechanic that will give you peace of mind and fair pricing, I suggest Champion.

I had a great experience with this mechanic. I was able to get my car in quickly, have it diagnosed accurately, and fixed completely at an honest and decent price. They were willing to work with my warranty (which isn't always easy) and communicated fully with me during every step of the process. I will definitely be going back.
